002 (4)
From 2011 begins its activities environmental disclosure, ecological HELIOS SANABRIA boat equipped with the most modern means, incorporating the latest technologies and includes an underwater camera.

The idea of the promoter, David Salvador (Europarques Hispanolusos) has been slow to bear fruit but in the end has resulted in a magnificent ship like this privileged environment deserves. Actually it is a unique environmental project, which has achieved zero emissions of noise, liquids or gases. A true example of sustainable development.

Hiking and activities you can do.

Sotillo Waterfall , leaving the town of that name is considered of medium difficulty, height difference of 400 meters and the entire route is on track. To reach it from Ribadelago, you have to drive to the Puente de Sanabria, they are 12 kilometers from the ZA-104. There you must take a right turn towards Sotillo, about six kilometers, park the car, there is secure parking, and start walking. There is a little trick, you should ignore the maps that will indicate a path of rising and lowering. Sotillo used to return to the same as you used to climb the waterfall. Is more simple. Do not expect to see a waterfall like Niagara, but you will find a small waterfall but with an environment of great beauty. The entire tour you can do three or four hours. It is interesting to this route in spring because meltwater in abundance looks impressive.
The following map will help you:

Laguna de Carros and Sotillo : Leaving the Plaza of Spain in New Ribadelago (just opposite our hostel) and after crossing the forest known as La Beseda arrive at the Laguna de los Carros. So far you've traveled 1.5 kilometers a level of 25 to 45%, from there take the road off to the right you will reach the Laguna de Sotillo, this part should know well or have some experience in the bush because it is very easy to miss. In the Beseda you can see species such as oak trees, hazels, hollies. It is considered one of the best preserved of all Castile and Leon native forests. Without finishing the route and worth visiting and go all this forest. It is populated by big game, with a large number of wild boars, foxes, wolves, etc.The complete route is 10 kilometers, high difficulty, altitude 600 meters, path and forest track. It is a route for people with some experience because the route between the Laguna de Carros and Sotillo are often lost hikers with little experience. The best map for this route is the National Geographic Service. This route has coverage for all phones. Interesting, because it can be helpful. You better the previous map page principalAviso legal and privacy. Path of the Monks: From Ribadelago Viejo to San Martin de Castañeda for the tour that formerly did the monks of the Benedictine monastery of San Martin they were coming down the valley to collect taxes or take the trout lake this route is a balcony from where you can see all the lake. Low difficulty, slope 200 meters path. But the path is not easy to follow so we advise you without losing sight of the lake walk around the sites with fewer weeds and vegetation walkable. You must take into account the travel back and forth or you go to search drive to San Martin. On the right you can see drawn on a picture, you can enlarge.

River Canyon Forcadura: From Vigo de Sanabria to Laguna de los Peces, with a distance of 7 (one way) kilometers, medium difficulty, altitude 500 meters, path. Following the Forcadura River from the Barrio de Arriba de Vigo to Laguna de los Peces (not lagoon, as it is artificial, nor does fish). The beginning of the route is interested but is the most uniform and boring of all. The most interesting of this route is to cross Vigo from the start, it is a lovely village with very special people (FRS).

Tera River Canyon and San Martin Cave : The star and the most spectacular route, distance 12 kilometers, altitude 810 meters, high-difficulty route path. By the way, there is no cave but so called a small lake excavated by a glacier. It is the best route in the area, spectacular and history. For her down the 59 year flood that caused 160 deaths. You can still see the "scars" on the riverbed of the great flood. If you go to Sanabria not forget to walk this path. In the hostel Martin have aerial photos of the area, photographed in the year 1,956 by the Americans.

River Canyon Cardenas , it is a difficult path with steep gradients of up to 40%. Leaving Ribadelago take the road to the Old Town, and before we turn to the left wing to reach the town of Moncabril, where Endesa Electric plant is. Just before arriving take a paved road to the left and begin to climb the Valley Folgosa until the dam Dam Cardenas, cross the dam and the forest road we reach the peak of Fraile and begin to go down to the power plant again. They are 5 or 6 hours round trip. Beside you can see the peak from the valley and the valley from the barrage Cardenas.

In our hostel asks Angel, and inform you of all possibilities, with drawings and data so you can enjoy our mountains. Do not forget, because there are routes not put in the books, very interesting. For example I propose the following: With the car we will go to San Martin de Castaneda and from there continue to Laguna de Los Peces (which as we have said in another chapter nor lagoon and has no fish), there leave the car and taking the route that misses to the left of the hut of the shepherds will go up to Lagunas de la Ventosa, passing between the two lakes, we will begin to descend into Borzabuelos that is a false flat downhill with one of the best sources in the area. at this time we are going west. A couple of kilometers later begin to lower the costs of Porqueira, and sight the impressive valley of Vega de Conde, with the reservoir of the same name in the center. We cross the valley by the dam reservoir and take the dirt track that goes south to the banks of the Tera River five kilometers downstream reach Vega de Tera, and we can see the remains of one of the most unfortunate disasters of this century, are the remains of the dam that broke in 1959 and further down Ribadelago killed more than 140 people. Again cross the river below the dam and begin to climb again made the Lagunas de la Ventosa and again the car. It can last all day and will be a nice experience. The map below is a variant to reach Peña Trevinca in summer. You can help yourself to the proposed route or to make it according to the map.

Other activities are mainly the bathrooms on the shores of Lake road increasingly restricted, mountain bikes, horses, etc .. Remember you are in a Natural Park and should treat the environment with care so you can us to last. I propose a route to do with mountain biking:

Route 1 .- Leaving Ribadelago take the road towards San Justo (seven kilometers), there in the middle of the village take the path of Trefacio (three kilometers), is a flat road bordering the Tera River at the beginning and then the Trefacio River. Trefacio first to reach what we find is the cemetery but on arriving at the parish church, take the road of Vigo in the neighborhood of Barreiro and the area known as Baltoucino. They are five kilometers uphill but it is a practically virgin route, reaching Forcadura cross the River Vigo and Vigo by the highway from San Martin to the junction and again Ribadelago. Alternatively if you find strength in Trefacio instead of going to Vigo, you can go towards Cerdillo and Murias, it is marked in the square of the Church of Trefacio. From Murias and lake in the background you can go Vigo and therefore Ribadelago.

Monastery of San Martin de Castaneda : Monastery of ancient foundation, located in one of the most beautiful spots that could build a monastery. Mid-twelfth century, the present church belonged to the monastery by Alfonso VII initiative is subjected to a first reform carried out by the Christian monk Pedro joining the monastery of Carracedo. In 1245 a second reform, joining the Cistercians, also hand Carracedo occurs.
Today the church is the parish of the place. It is a large temple with three ships, cruise and head formed by three staggered apses with their respective presbyteries. The factory is good granite blocks with thick walls and little decorated.

Natural Park : In 1949 it was declared a site of national interest, the park covers an area of 22,365 hectares, is the largest lake glacial origin in Europe, has a depth of 51 meters, a length 3 km. and a width of 1.5 water has a permanence within four months. The lake is 13 kilometers from Puebla de Sanabria. It is a landscape of clear water that change color depending on time of day and the season. In summer you can see people practicing water sports and drink in their bars, an atmosphere that surprises in the interior of the peninsula, between silent mountains and landscapes carved by glaciation. In autumn, the landscape is lonely and mysterious air is even more intense.

THE LEGEND OF LAKE SANABRIA, MORE OFFICIAL VERSION

Formerly in the place now occupied by Lake Sanabria, there was a village called Villaverde Lucerne. One day was presented in the town a poor begging (Jesus Christ or St. James), and in every house closed the doors. Only they sympathized with him and attended some women who were baking bread in an oven. He asked there the poor, and women threw him a piece of dough baked that both grew, who barely could get him through the mouth of it. Seeing this, they threw a second piece of dough, even smaller, which rose much more than size, so it became necessary to remove it in pieces. They gave him the first came out.
When the poor man was rescued, and to punish the lack of charity that town, told the women to leave the oven and go up to a high, because it would flood the place. Once the women left Villaverde said the poor: "Here I Finco my staff, here birth of a gargallón, here Finco my sword, here birth of a gargallón water". As soon as these words were uttered, he sprang impetuous supplier land, which in a few moments completely flooded Valverde de Lucerna, leaving the lake as seen today. It was exposed just an island, never covered in floods and located exactly in the place occupied by the oven that was succored the poor. Moreover, the lake retained under that anyone who approached him on the morning of San Juan and this in God's grace would hear ringing the bells of the submerged Villaverde.
This legend appears in some French medieval texts with different variants. Thus, it appears in the Chronica of Turpin, which, after narrating the various conquests of Charlemagne in Spain, says, "took all but Lucerne, which is in Green Valley, who could not take it until the last year, because it was very strong and well stocked. at last surrounded and besieged for four months, but when he saw that he could not take by force, prayed to God and Santiago. the walls is then collapsed and left without inhabitants, and a large water, like a pond, he rose among the people, black, dark and horrible. "
A similar legend is collected by the French writer Ernest Renan: "I think sometimes I have in the bottom of the heart of a village Is that still makes bells ringing."
